As a tool supporting policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, the European Union (EU) has developed a methodology to calculate the environmental impact of various types of products under the name of PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) and is based on the analysis of products’ life cycle (LCA – Life Cycle Assessment).
In order to support the creation of a green economy and to contain the excessive use of resources, the Italian government has decided to adopt these PEF rules to create a voluntary national scheme for calculating and communicating the environmental footprint of a product called “Made Green in Italy” (MGI).
The voluntary national scheme for the assessment and communication of the environmental footprint of products, called “Made Green in Italy” is established by art. 21, paragraph 1 of Law no. 221/2015 (Environmental related to the 2014 Stability Law) containing “Environmental provisions to promote green economy measures and to contain the excessive use of natural resources.
To realize the environmental footprint assessment study and the statement, reference was made to the following standards and recommendations:
-
ISO 14040:2006/Amd 1:2020
Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Principles and framework - ISO 14044:2006/Amd 2:2020
Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Requirements and guidelines - Recommendation 2013/179/EU
Commission Recommendation dd 09/04/2013 on the use of common methodologies to measure and communicate the life-cycle environmental performance of products and organizations. - Product Category Rules (SmPC)
regarding PE multipurpose bags (NACE 22.29.29) version 1.0; - Regolamento per l’attuazione dello schema nazionale volontario
for the assessment and reporting of the environmental footprint of products, called “Made Green in Italy”, referred to in Article 21, paragraph 1, of Law no. 221 dated 28/12/2015.
The environmental footprint assessment study contains, specifically, the calculation of the values of the environmental indicators relating to the three main impact categories identified by the relative SMCs (Product Category Rules) and the value obtained by aggregation of the three main impact indicators through normalization and weighing.
This value is compared to the benchmark value defined within the rcps themselves.
The regulation provides a classification of products into three classes of performance and our articles are all in class A, ie products that have a better performance than the average product (benchmark)
